It's a big day for Royal Caribbean fans -- the day they finally find out
what gee-whiz marvels the line has dreamed up for its next ship, Oasis
of the Seas. The company that pioneered rock climbing walls, ice skating
rinks and surfing pools on the high seas will unveil its plans for the
much-awaited vessel -- the largest ever built -- at an event in New
York.
What we already know is this:
The 220,000-ton giant, which will launch in late 2009, will be more than
40% larger than the largest cruise ship afloat, and it'll include such
innovative features as a massive “Central Park” with live trees and
outdoor restaurant seating. The ship will hold 5,400 passengers at
double occupancy — a number once thought unthinkable in the cruise
business.
The head of the Royal Caribbean
brand, Adam Goldstein, says the line will open bookings for the ship on
Sept. 3. He spoke about the "neighborhoods" planned for the ship
(Central Park, Boardwalk and the Royal Promenade). Goldstein says that
with third and fourth people included in cabins the ship will be able to
hold up to 6,300 passengers.
Want to be among the first to
hear the rest of what the line plans for the vessel, including its
official launch date and itinerary? A brochure handed out in the press
room here shows an Eastern Caribbean itinerary from Fort Lauderdale to
Charlotte Amalie, St. Thomas; Philipsburg, St. Maarten; and Nassau in
the Bahamas. It will alternate with a Western Caribbean itinerary to
Labadee, Haiti; Falmouth, Jamaica and Cozumel, Mexico.
Royal Caribbean's popular cruise
director Ken Rush states that the cruise line plans includes a new
neighborhood called Boardwalk that will have carnival amusements. "It
will feel a little like you are on the Boardwalk at Atlantic City."
Another big item is an
amphitheater on the back of the ship for water-based shows. The ship
will also have snazzy double-decker loft apartments and a Royal
Promenade that is twice the width of the ones on the line's Voyager and
Freedom class vessels.
Another innovation: A mezzanine
level that overlooks the Royal Promenade. A spokeswoman says the
AquaTheater on the back of the ship will have the largest and deepest
freshwater pool at sea. While there will be shows there at night,
passengers will be able to use the pool to swim during the day. The line
also will offer scuba lessons in the pool. No word yet on the other pool
areas on the ship.
No word yet on the date of the
Oasis’ maiden voyage. A spokesman for the cruise line says that we
should know soon.
