THE PLANT CELL
The cell is the basic unit of life.
The following is a glossary of plant cell terms.

cell membrane - the thin layer that surrounds the cell inside the cell wall. The cell membrane is semipermeable, allowing some substances to pass into the cell and blocking others.

cell wall - a thick, strong membrane that surrounds the outside of a plant cell.

cytoplasm
- the jellylike material of the cell that holds all the cell parts in place.

mitochondrion - The mitochondrion provides energy for the cell by turning nutrients into food.

nucleus - The nucleus controls all of the cell parts. It is like the brain in a cell.

vacuole -  The vacuole fills with food for the cell and stores the extra waste.

chloroplast - Plants can make their own food (photosynthesis). This process takes place in the chloroplasts. Chloroplasts contains chlorophyll, a green substance that is needed for photosynthesis to take place.
