A Civil Right Discussion between EVG and Leonia Students
January 2009

The 6th grade class participated in a Civil Rights research project, discussion, and debate.  The students researched and wrote papers on different civil rights leaders from history.  Some of the civil rights leaders researched included:  Martin Luther King, Jr., Rosa Parks, Eleanor Roosevelt, Susan B. Anthony, and Frederick Douglass.   The EVG and LMS 6th graders presented their civil rights leader in a “Meeting of the Minds” discussion and debated to see which civil rights leader had the most impact on civil rights throughout history.  Our day at Leonia ended with the guest speaker, Mrs. Theodora Lacey.  Mrs. Lacey, who is a retired science teacher and lives in Teaneck, spoke about her childhood growing up in Montgomery, Alabama.  Her stories of Rosa Parks, who was a close family friend, and Dr. King were quite inspiring.  Mrs. Lacey even worked for Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. during the Montgomery bus boycott!
