The Supreme Court agreed with the Tinker family.   They ruled 7-2 in favor of the Tinkers.  The armbands had not violated school dress codes or disrupted classes.  Wearing the armbands was a form of speech, and the First amendment guarantees free speech. 

 

(A later Supreme Court decision said that there are limits on the right of free speech in schools.) In 1988 they said that school officials had the right to censor and remove inappropriate materials from school publications.
