Additional Information on Upcoming Events...

In November:

POTLUCK SUPPER:  Our annual potluck supper provides a wonderful opportunity for students and their families to come socialize after school hours.  This is an especially nice chance for working parents to meet their children's friends and fellow EVG moms, dads and guardians.  A form will be sent home asking each family to donate a dish to the event.  The PTO will provide the rest: burners and trays, drinks, plates, napkins, flatware, dessert and music!  The event will be held in the gym, allowing everyone space to mingle as they eat.  The event is a very informal gathering and a wonderful prelude to the school-sponsored International Food Festival, which typically takes place in the spring.

WHAT YOU CAN DO: We will need volunteers to help shop for supplies, collate forms to determine needs, receive and refrigerate meals (at school) when necessary, set up and clean up.  We also ask that parents please respond and let us know if they are coming and what they will bring.  When our attendees grossly exceed expectations, we can fall short on supplies!

In December:

HOLIDAY SHOPPE:  Our annual Holiday Shoppe allows children the opportunity to purchase gifts for loved ones with the assistance of parent volunteers.  Items in the shop range in price from approximately $2 to $12.  You will be sent home a form allowing you to 'guide' your children's purchases (i.e., identify for whom they should purchase gifts - e.g., mom, dad, sister, grandmother - and a price range for each individual).  This form doubles as an envelope and, on the day of your child's visit, you can return the form and necessary funds.  Any change will be sent home via this envelope as well.  Your child will be thrilled to surprise family and friends with the gifts they have chosen on their own!

WHAT YOU CAN DO: You will be receiving a volunteer sign up sheet via your children's travel folders.  Volunteers will be needed to help unpack and price items, to help students find and purchase gifts during shop hours, to straighten up between class visits, and to pack up.  The volunteer sign up sheet will list the times when each class is scheduled to attend the fair.

 2009 Holiday Shoppe: December 3-9

BARNES & NOBLE GIFT WRAP:  During this fun annual 10-day event, our volunteers collect donations for the PTO while providing a valuable service to people who need help wrapping the books they have purchased for their loved ones!  Barnes & Noble donates the gift wrap, tape and gift tags, while we provide the gift-wrapping experts!  We operate in 2 hour-long shifts, with 2 people per shift, from 10am to 10pm each day.

WHAT YOU CAN DO:  Fill out the volunteer forms that will be coming home with your children and indicate during which shift or shifts you’d like to wrap.  Is there a certain friend, coworker, spouse or child you’d like to wrap with?  Let us know if you are a veteran or a new wrapper, and we can help place you with the perfect wrapping partner!  Be sure to include all your contact info, as it may take a little maneuvering for us to get all the shifts filled.

Ongoing:

BIRTHDAY CLUB: One Monday each month, the PTO offers an after-lunch treat and lots of happy wishes to the children celebrating a birthday that month. Parents and young siblings are always welcome to join the celebration.  Check the school calendar for times.

Coming Down the Road...

AUTHOR ASSEMBLY: Last year, our children met with acclaimed author and poet Janet Wong.  Janet is the author of 19 books; she has been featured on Oprah and CNN, spoken at the White House, and visited thousands of school children. During her visit, Ms. Wong shared her poetry and family stories and helped our students feel excited about sharing their own ideas in writing!  We look forward to sponsoring a similar event this spring.

TEACHER & STAFF LUNCHEON:  On the final half-day of the school year, the PTO will sponsor a luncheon held in honor of the wonderful Teachers, Administration and Staff we are so fortunate to have here at EVG.  Board Members of the PTO will help decorate and transform the cafeteria into a festive lunch and social spot.

CARNIVAL:  For the last several years, the PTO has sponsored a carnival to celebrate the hard work of our students all year long.  Each grade will have approximately 40 minutes to attend the carnival, which features games, inflatables such as a tall slide and moon walk, spin art, and a dunk tank!

WHAT YOU CAN DO: To ensure the success of this event, many volunteers are needed to help with set up and clean up, to man tables and activities, and to organize the smooth movement of children from one site to another.  Volunteer request forms will be going home with your children soon; plan to spend a few hours or the whole day with us!

SCHOLASTIC BOOK FAIR:  Twice each year, the PTO sponsors an on-site book fair.  Each class is given an opportunity to come browse through the selections and purchase books to take home with them.  Teachers also create wish lists so that any parent choosing to do so can donate books to the teachers' classroom libraries.  Funds raised in past book fairs have allowed us to provide teachers with credits to purchase additional books for their students' use.  Running our first book fair of each year as a fundraiser (or "for profit" event) permits us to have a second "Buy One, Get One Free" book fair, an event the students love!

WHAT YOU CAN DO: You will be receiving a volunteer sign up sheet via your children's travel folders.  Volunteers will be needed to unpack, to help students find and purchase books during fair hours, to straighten up between class visits, and to pack up at the event's conclusion.  The volunteer sign up sheet will list the times when each class is scheduled to attend the fair.  In turn, you will be able to volunteer during your child's class visit!
