FALL FUNDRAISER : The PTO has traditionally begun each year with a brochure-based sale. This event is our major, annual fundraising drive, and monies earned benefit activities for all students throughout the year. Our Fall 2010 sale will include such items as gift wrap, cookie dough, jewelry and magazines. The sale begins on September 13; orders must be placed by September 27th. (Brochures and order forms will be sent home with your children.) All products will be delivered during the final weeks of October.

Keep in mind, if you are not interested in making a purchase, but would like to donate money toward the PTO's activities, we will gladly accept your donation and put it to good use! As with the fundraiser, checks can be made out to the EVG PTO and sent in with your children. The PTO does not request membership fees (if your child attends EVG, YOU are a member of the PTO!). We rely on funds raised (and lots of volunteer hours!) to offer students and teachers our programs and support.

Scheduled for the 13th of September, Type of Fundraiser: TBA

HOW YOU CAN HELP: We will need assistance with the distribution of brochures; the collating, checking, and calculating of orders; photocopying; and the distribution of products once they have arrived. If you are interested in lending a hand, please let us know via email!

Picture Day: The PTO organizes Picture Day. Your child will receive a flyer confirming the date and giving you more details on Picture Day.

Scheduled for the 4th of October

WHAT YOU CAN DO: Send in the flyer that comes in your child's mail.

SCHOLASTIC BOOK FAIR:  Twice each year, the PTO sponsors an on-site book fair.  Each class is given an opportunity to come browse through the selections and purchase books to take home with them.  Teachers also create wish lists so that any parent choosing to do so can donate books to the teachers' classroom libraries.  Funds raised in past book fairs have allowed us to provide teachers with credits to purchase additional books for their students' use.  Running our first book fair of each year as a fundraiser (or "for profit" event) permits us to have a second "Buy One, Get One Free" book fair, an event the students love!

Scheduled for the 8th of October and 11th of April

WHAT YOU CAN DO: You will be receiving a volunteer sign up sheet via your children's travel folders.  Volunteers will be needed to unpack, to help students find and purchase books during fair hours, to straighten up between class visits, and to pack up at the event's conclusion.  The volunteer sign up sheet will list the times when each class is scheduled to attend the fair.  In turn, you will be able to volunteer during your child's class visit!

POTLUCK SUPPER:  Our annual potluck supper provides a wonderful opportunity for students and their families to come socialize after school hours.  This is an especially nice chance for working parents to meet their children's friends and fellow EVG moms, dads and guardians.  A form will be sent home asking each family to donate a dish to the event.  The PTO will provide the rest: burners and trays, drinks, plates, napkins, flatware, dessert and music!  The event will be held in the gym, allowing everyone space to mingle as they eat.  The event is a very informal gathering and a wonderful prelude to the school-sponsored International Food Festival, which typically takes place in the spring.

Scheduled for the 28th of October

WHAT YOU CAN DO: Please come and be part of the event, if in no way other than being there. It's a wonderful time to build community and get to put faces to the names your children have been throwing around everyday. We have teachers come too. It's a great time to meet your child's teachers in an informal setting. We will need volunteers to help shop for supplies, collate forms to determine needs, receive and refrigerate meals (at school) when necessary, set up and clean up.  We also ask that parents please respond and let us know if they are coming and what they will bring.  When our attendees grossly exceed expectations, we can fall short on supplies!

HOLIDAY SHOPPE:  Our annual Holiday Shoppe allows children the opportunity to purchase gifts for loved ones with the assistance of parent volunteers.  Items in the shop range in price from approximately $2 to $12.  You will be sent home a form allowing you to 'guide' your children's purchases (i.e., identify for whom they should purchase gifts - e.g., mom, dad, sister, grandmother - and a price range for each individual).  This form doubles as an envelope and, on the day of your child's visit, you can return the form and necessary funds.  Any change will be sent home via this envelope as well.  Your child will be thrilled to surprise family and friends with the gifts they have chosen on their own!

Scheduled for the 24th of November

WHAT YOU CAN DO: You will be receiving a volunteer sign up sheet via your children's travel folders.  Volunteers will be needed to help unpack and price items, to help students find and purchase gifts during shop hours, to straighten up between class visits, and to pack up.  The volunteer sign up sheet will list the times when each class is scheduled to attend the fair.

Barnes and Nobles Book fair : From December 10-12, a percentage of any purchases made at the Edgewater Barnes and Noble will go to the EVG-PTO. Purchases must be accompanied by the voucher which will be sent home with your children. You can encourage your friends and family to make their purchases using these vouchers as well!
All monies earned will be used toward programs and events for our students. In the past, many of our teachers have very generously offered their time to read or perform at the fair; we are hoping to repeat that this year!

Scheduled for the 10th of December

WHAT YOU CAN DO: First and foremost, come out, enjoy the opportunity to see some familiar EVG faces, make some of your holiday purchases, and support our school! We will also need volunteers to assist at the event, especially should teachers volunteer to read or perform. These volunteers assure that seats have been arranged; they can introduce our teacher and check in with shopping parents to make sure they have vouchers on hand. We will also need help with photocopying and with the distribution of materials.

BARNES & NOBLE GIFT WRAP:  During this fun annual 10-day event, our volunteers collect donations for the PTO while providing a valuable service to people who need help wrapping the books they have purchased for their loved ones!  Barnes & Noble donates the gift wrap, tape and gift tags, while we provide the gift-wrapping experts!  We operate in 2 hour-long shifts, with 2 people per shift, from 10am to 10pm each day.

Scheduled for the 15th of December

WHAT YOU CAN DO: Fill out the volunteer forms that will be coming home with your children and indicate during which shift or shifts you’d like to wrap.  Is there a certain friend, coworker, spouse or child you’d like to wrap with?  Let us know if you are a veteran or a new wrapper, and we can help place you with the perfect wrapping partner!  Be sure to include all your contact info, as it may take a little maneuvering for us to get all the shifts filled.

TEACHER & STAFF LUNCHEON On a half-day of the school year, the PTO will sponsor a luncheon held in honor of the wonderful Teachers, Administration and Staff we are so fortunate to have here at EVG.  Board Members of the PTO will help decorate and transform the cafeteria into a festive lunch and social spot.

Schedule TBA

WHAT YOU CAN DO: Volunteers are required to set up and decorate the venue, take care of the catering for the event, organize music and other entertainment and help make it a memorable day for the teachers and staff who work with our kids in class and around the school.

AUTHOR ASSEMBLY: Last year, EVG was thrilled to have author James Preller coming to visit!  Mr. Preller is perhaps best known for his Jigsaw Jones series, and he has penned a number of books for older children as well including Six Innings and Along Came Spider.  His most recent young adult novel, Bystander, was a 2009 Junior Library Guild Selection and, in 2008, Six Innings was reported by the New York Public Library to be among the Top 100 Best Books for Reading and Sharing. You can learn more about Mr. Preller at his website: www.jamespreller.com.

WHAT YOU CAN DO:

ONGOING PROGRAMS...

BIRTHDAY CLUB: One Monday each month, the PTO offers an after-lunch treat and lots of happy wishes to the children celebrating a birthday that month. Parents and young siblings are always welcome to join the celebration.  Check the school calendar for times.

WHAT YOU CAN DO: Parent volunteers can help with the preparation and clean up of materials along with the organizers.

INDOOR RECESS : On inclement weather days, when they are unable to go outside during recess, children spend time in the gym, library or auditorium. The PTO has purchased and collected many age-appropriate games such as Chess, Checkers, Connect Four and Candy Land to be used in the auditorium or library during this time. We also supply the children with crayons, pencils, and paper for drawing and writing.

WHAT YOU CAN DO: Parent volunteers can help with the preparation and clean up of materials. If you prefer to work behind the scenes, we need people to set up the cupboard so that materials can be put away and organized smoothly by the volunteers. A couple of volunteers are needed to maintain the materials in the cupboard on a regular basis. If you have games in a like new condition that you are not using, with all the pieces intact, please donate them to our games cupboard, so the kids can have more variety.
