Martin Luther King Assembly
2009

Each year, Reverend Lundy visits EVG students in January to help them understand the meaning behind the Martin Luther King holiday they will be enjoying this Monday. This year she spoke about the historic importance of an African American being elected for the first time as the President of the United States. How far we have come since Dr. King made his famous "I Have a Dream" speech (which we had the opportunity to watch in part) in 1963 during the March on Washington! How far we have come since the days of Rosa Parks and separate facilities for "colored" people! Dr. Lundy pointed to the sixth graders seated in the balcony. That's where "colored" people had to sit--even in church, growing up in the South. The students had a great time when they had a chance to dance to will.i.am's hit song, "It's a New Day." Enjoy the song and video--click here.

The other highlight of this assembly were the "Dream" speeches made by EVG students in the upper grades. The wished for everything from a clean environment to peace--and their speeches were beautifully delivered, slowly and clearly. We are so proud of you all.
