We read "Postcards from Pluto: A Tour of the Solar System" in class today. We talked about the special order of the planets and learned a silly sentence to help us remember their order. We even wrote our own sentences to help us remember the order.
For homework, complete your Reader's Log for the night. When you read at home this week, think about what you see in the pictures and about the words that you read. You can use this information to help understand the story better. Using these clues to help you understand the story is called making inferences. Practice that with each book you read this week. |
|
Spelling and Phonics |
We will be reviewing ai, ay, a-e, o-e, u-e, and i-e this week. We had our spelling test today. |
|
Writing and Grammar |
We worked in our handwriting books today. We practiced making the letters Y and J. We are trying very hard to space our letters correctly and to use the lines on the paper to help us write neatly. |
|
Math |
We reviewed our lessons from the week and played some of the games we learned. Our new favorite game is Tric Trac.
Home Games Two Fisted Penny Addition with different sums of pennies. Try using 15 or 16 pennies, put some pennies in the right and figure out how many would go in the left. Repeat and see how many different ways you can make that sum. Dime-Nickel-Penny Exchange Put 10 dimes, 8 nickels, and 20 pennies on a plate. Roll two dice. Take as many pennies as dots on the dice. Then exchange pennies for nickels or dimes, so that you have the fewest coins possible. The next person takes a turn and does the same. Continue playing until all the dimes are gone. Whoever has the most dimes, wins. Flash Card Facts addition facts can be practiced with addition flash cards you can make at home or purchase (I found some in Target for $1). Keep practicing until your child knows the sums in a snap! We should know our fast facts by heart. They are sums to 10, any one digit number + 0, any one digit number +1, and one digit doubles (1+1, 2+2, etc.). Telling Time practice telling time to the hour, half-hour, quarter to and quarter past. Addition Top It take a standard deck of cards and remove the face cards and tens. Place the card in the middle. The first person turns over two cards and adds the two numbers together. The second person turns over two cards and adds the numbers together. The person with the larger sum takes all the cards. If it is equal, each person turns over two more cards and adds them together. Repeat until all cards are gone. Fact Triangles keep them at home in a bag or envelope. Practice them whenever you have time.

Science and Social Studies |
Our animals have been hibernating for 107 days.
We will begin learning about the solar system. We watched a video and made a book about our Solar System. We will each be picking a planet and doing a Planetary Report on our planet. This report will be shared with the class next week. We will start our report at school and bring it home over the weekend. Parents may help to complete the report by using resources at home like the internet and library. Reports will be due back by Wednesday, March 17.
We will be learning about women in history and St. Patrick's Day. We will be learning about Sally Ride this week. We will answer the following questions: Who was she? What did she do? Where did she go? When did she do it? Why is it important? |
