Did you know that the first Arbor
Day took place in Nebraska in 1872? It was the idea of Julius
Sterling Morton Morton who worked to improve agricultural techniques
throughout the United States when he served as President Grover
Cleveland's Secretary of Agriculture.
We always seem to be gifted with
beautiful weather here in Edgewater each Arbor Day. And today's
EVG celebration was no different. With the participation of the Edgewater DPW, students planted a tree
on the school grounds. Each grade prepared songs and poems for the
celebration, and several students were picked to shovel dirt around
the new tree. Students also received a spruce sapling to bring home
to plant.
This year, Mrs. Perl explained, our
new addition is a Kwanzan cherry tree with double pink
flowers. It is already quite beautiful, as you can see from the
background picture.
We were also pleased to have
members of the Edgewater Shade Tree Commission present, Matt Perasso
and Fern Norris, and
Gregory Franz, Borough Administrator. As always, thank you Tom Quinton and the
Edgewater DPW for providing us with our beautiful new tree.
